Kardashian sisters model for Sears denim line

Kardashian sisters – Kim, Kourtney and Khloe – have modeled for the Kardashian Kollection, a denim collection for Sears.

The jeans line is created to fit women of various sizes and shapes and the three styles of jeans in the new line reflect the taste of each of the Kardashian sisters.

For the photo shoot, the sisters wore long-sleeved white shirts atop their favourite jeans from the new range.

Kim wore “The Kim” jeans that have a straight leg and are low-cut. “The Kourtney” jeans are meant for petite women and are skin-tight, while “The Khloe” jeans have a high-rise waist and are suited for those who are tall and possess curvy figures.

The new Kardashian Kollection will be offered exclusively at Sears stores and will also be available online through the Sears website.

Peruvian event to be centre of Latin American fashion

Peru Moda, the biggest fashion event in the South American country of Peru, will become the centre of Latin American fashion this year, Jose Luis Silva, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, has said.

The fifteenth edition of the event, scheduled to be held from April 26 to 28 in the Peruvian capital of Lima, is expected to surpass the revenue of US$ 80.2 million grossed in 2011, according to Peru’s Export and Tourism Promotion Board (Promperu).

Around 350 exhibitors from Peru are likely to exhibit their products and designs at the event, which is likely to be visited by more than 1,400 buyers from foreign countries.

Promperu said that Peru Moda has been successful in the past due to efforts by Peruvian entrepreneurs to promote luxury fibres, such as pima and tanguis cotton, as well as alpaca and vicuña.

The event provides and excellent opportunity for overseas buyers to become aware about quality, prices, design, production capacity and product innovativeness of the Peruvian fashion industry.

Rio fashion week kicks off with Herchcovitch show

Rio de Janeiro's winter 2012 fashion week began with a utilitarian-inspired denim collection from Alexandre Herchcovitch, one of the biggest names in Brazilian fashion.

Herchcovitch, who has displayed his work on several international platforms, presented a sober collection that would have been more appropriate for catwalks in New York and Milan.

Herchcovitch was the only exception, as other collections during the day were filled with colours and depicted the use of bold designs, prints and shades.

Erika Frade and Alessa Migani were other designers to display their collections at the event.

The large kimono collection from Patachou had clear eastern influence and included kimono style wrap-dresses. Patachou’s designer Erika Frade was the star of the show as she went on to display crisp poplin for a work shirt and a dress in red leather for glamour.

The elegant collections form Sao Paulo-based fashion label Acquastudio had silk flowers and pastel hues with a 1950s influence. The display of full skirts, nipped waists and rhinestone-covered socks generated lot of excitement.

Nordstrom, in partnership with the Nashville Symphony, will present the Nordstrom Symphony Fashion Show, featuring a performance by five-time Grammy winner Carrie Underwood and an exclusive presentation of Oscar de la Renta's Pre-Fall 2012 collection on Tuesday, February 28.

The event, emceed by radio and television personality Storme Warren, will take place from 6-10 pm at Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, with a cocktail reception before the show and dinner to follow.

This year marks Nordstrom's first time producing the fashion show since opening a store at The Mall at Green Hills in September of 2011, as well as Carrie Underwood's first performance at the Symphony Fashion Show.

Guests will also have the opportunity to get a closer look at the featured fashions after the performance and fashion show at an exclusive boutique inside Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

Tonia Bastyan, of the famed 1990s UK womenswear designer duo of Press & Bastyan, has designed a collection working in collaboration with other designers.

The new collection Bastyan Collaborate has been designed in association with master of drapery Yong Fong and textile designer Vanessa Harrington.

Comprising of five pieces, two scarves and a clutch bag, the new collection will be on offer at House of Fraser, Brown Thomas and John Lewis in Ireland. It will be also made available online by Bastyan.

Last year, Bastyan, the label of Tonia Bastyan, launched its first store in London, backed by Aurora Fashions.

Fashion collections of renowned designers like Riyaz Gangji, Neeta Lulla, Nishika Lulla and Prabhat Samarasooriya were showcased on the concluding day of the Hyderabad International Fashion Week.

IL&FS Acts to Set Up Mega Leather Cluster in TN

The Union Government has started working on its Budget 2010-11 proposal of setting up mega leather clusters in seven States including Tamil Nadu, so as to help the leather industry to boost its export volumes over the next five years.

The Central Government will fund the major share for the establishment of the mega cluster in Tamil Nadu, which would entail an investment of around Rs. 1.2 to 2 billion. This funding assistance would be in the form of grants and the Union Ministry of Commerce is assessing several proposals for the purpose, a top official of the Council for Leather Exports said.

IL&FS, one of India's leading infrastructure development and finance companies, has been assigned the job of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) and assessing the labour availability at the site proposed by the Union Government for setting up the cluster. However, things are still in their initial stages, the official said.

As prior efforts of the Centre to establish such specific industrial zones like SEZs or industrial parks for the leather industry in the State did not materialize, the site for the project this time is expected to be finalized only after the task of mapping the labour availability and ensuring proper connectivity to the port conclude, he added.

China Texmatech eager to set up textile machinery plant in Gujarat

China Texmatech Co. Ltd. (CTMTC), the largest enterprise in China specialized in the import and export of textile machinery and technology, has expressed interest in setting up a high-tech textile machinery plant in west Indian State of Gujarat.

A delegation led by Mr. Wu Xiuhua, Vice President of CTMTC called on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and expressed its willingness to establish a high-tech project for manufacturing textile machinery.

The delegation also lauded the efforts of Gujarat government in creating an investment-friendly atmosphere in the State.

CTMTC turned into a limited company from state-owned company after gaining the share capital from Jingwei Textile Machinery Co. Ltd. in 2004. Presently the company focuses its business on the import and export of textile machinery and technology, textile products and garments, textile raw material, and contracted engineering.

Over the years, CTMTC’s import and export of textile machinery and technology has expanded from cotton spinning to wool spinning, flax spinning, silk, chemical fibre, knitting, printing, dyeing and many other fields.

What new trends in jewellery can we expect this summer?

For starters, the wedding season has just ended and summer has just set in. With the blistering heat, we can say goodbye to heavy pieces of jewellery for a while. Subtle statement pieces have been and will always remain favourites for summers, the key is not to over load yourself.

Will there be any particular stone that will be dominant this summer?

Jewellery trends don’t change so much so often, a lot of it can be attributed to the amount of money that is spent on it. Of course diamonds, solitaire, Columbian emeralds etc., will be seen like they have been for years now. It makes sense to stick to the classics, so that even if you’ve had the piece for more than a year, you will not get fed up with it. You could even consider it as an heirloom which you would want to save for your future generation. The quality of the stones used in jewellery is very important; it should be vibrant.

Do you have a target audience?

Honestly, I don’t stick to any age group as such. I feel that what I make should be what I would like to own. A lot of thought and detailing goes into making each piece. Having said that, I do believe that my jewellery is represented by the modern glamorous independent woman.

What is the basic difference between Indian jewellery and that of the West?

Indian women have so many options when it comes to jewellery. We have ornate heavy pieces; even our domestic helps wear different kinds of jewellery. You can notice the difference when you compare film award ceremonies here and abroad, women there wear only one statement piece, while we have multiple pieces. Also, we carry off jewellery better than them, thanks to our darker hair and skin colour.

Do Indians spend more on jewellery than clothes?

It’s a little difficult to answer that. Going back to the fact that Indian women are more flamboyant, we like to have entire range of clothes in our wardrobe — western formals and dresses as well as churidars and saris. Same applies to jewellery as well. We want the full range here too and so I guess they give equal importance to both

Do you face challenges in designing jewellery for people?

I do have my share of challenges. For instance, brides show me their outfit and ask for jewellery to be designed around it. I advice people to choose bridal jewellery first and then pick their clothes. That’s because wedding outfits are used only once, whereas, jewellery can go on to become heirloom pieces. However, it is also fun to take up such challenges.

On the back of a boom in apparel exports from Bangladesh, the garment accessory industry too has followed in its footsteps and taken off and is flourishing like never before.

Clothing accessories like zippers, buttons, labels, elastic bands, collar stays, collar bones and cartons are as important an item, as the fabric itself, while manufacturing a garment.

From import dependency in the early 90s, today, the Bangladesh accessory industry has attained almost self-sufficiency in domestic production of various products needed to put together a garment.

Four creative accessory designers gave unique touches to their collections for summer/resort 2011 at Lakmé Fashion Week.

It was a concept collection for the future inspired by aerodynamics, speed and unconventional ideas. Prabhat Kumar brought in innovative touches like reptile prints and embosses for the Summer/Resort 2011 season for leather bags, using cow and sheep nappa with waterproof lining which had the classic high fashion look.

Called “Haute off the Ramp” the collapsible backpacks, clutches, small bags, sling ones were created in reptile prints or with laser cuts and fish motifs embossed in colours that ranged from grey, white, tan, green, orange, blue and red. Spacious and very well finished the bags will be a great addition to stylish wardrobes with buyers who appreciate oceanic nature.

Giving a colourful nomadic feel to her leather and wooden clutches, Rachana Reddy’s “Global Gypsy” collection was a riot of intricate symbols colours and motifs inspired by tribal art forms around the world. The detailing on the bags was etched and carved to blend beautifully with the fabrics and leather in vibrant colours. Taking touches of ancient cultures the line had a great universal appeal that will thrill fashion watchers.

The theme of this conference is “Vision 2020: Emerging New Opportunities Worldwide and Challenging Business Strategies.”

Impressive autumn/winter collection at The Exhibition

The British Fashion Council has confirmed over 170 emerging and established accessories, jewellery and ready to wear labels to show their autumn/winter 11 collections at the leading international designer showcase, The Exhibition at London Fashion Week. Known as a platform to view emerging designer businesses alongside established brands, this season the exhibition will showcase 60 design talents new to London Fashion Week.

The Exhibition is open to all UK and International media and buyers. Registration is available on site from 18th – 22nd February, 10am until 7pm (closing at 6pm on 22nd).

The Exhibition will be based in the South Wing of Somerset House over 4 floors, where accessories, footwear, jewellery, and ready-to-wear and designers will come together to form the sales hub of London Fashion Week. Amongst the new designers showcasing this season are Draw in Light; Nancy Van Ostren; Sarah Baadarani; Shao Yen Chen; Teatum Jones and Tze Goh. More established brands Lara Bohinc and Linda Farrow will rejoin the likes of Erickson Beamon and milliner Stephen Jones, whilst new accessories designers include Ongwat’s architecturally inspired jewellery; Joanne Stoker’s footwear label and skillfully constructed handbags from Thomas Blaak. Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 - Global Investment Hub for Technical Textiles

The Gujarat textile sector attracted investments amounting to around Rs 252 billion at the recently concluded Vibrant Gujarat Summit - 2011. In all 139 MoUs were inked at the 2011 summit out of which 34 MOU's are from the emerging Technical Textiles sector. The total investment in Textiles sector is expected to create employment opportunities for around 140,448 people.

The major portions of the investments were made in the Spinning sector, followed by Technical Textiles and rest was accounted for by textile parks, fabric processing and apparel sector. The total investment in technical textiles sector totaling to Rs 45.50 billion (USD 1 billion), which in turn will generate employment for around 12,340 people.

Among the major overseas investors is Finland-based Ahlstrom Fiber composites, a leader in medical textiles and which already has an operational Nonwovens plant in Mundra and is now planning to invest another Rs 400 million. Another Austrian investor is TenCate Geosynthetics Austria Gmbh, which is investing Rs 1 billion and will generate employment for around 100 people.

From amongst the domestic textile investors are Welspun India which is investing Rs 7 billion, Chiripal Poly Films Ltd is investing Rs 10 billion to produce BOPP and BOPET and similar expansion in both (film/yarn for application in technical textile) and Alok Industries is investing Rs 6 billion in expansion of existing capacities and processing for technical textiles.

Others include Narmada Thermal Power Ltd in a Polyester Film (BOPET) plant at a cost of Rs 4 billion; Sumilon Polyester Ltd is investing Rs 2.5 billion in a Pet Film and Metalised Polyester Film unit and GIT Textiles Manufacturing Limited is setting up a technical textiles weaving unit by investing Rs 1 billion.

Shubh Polyfilms Pvt Ltd is investing Rs 2.09 billion to produce BOPET Films, Modern Denim Ltd is investing Rs 1.98 billion to produce protective and sportswear fabrics and a technical textiles park is being setup by Hi Tech Technical Textile Park India at a cost of Rs 1 billion.

Lohan was spotted in Los Angeles wearing the 10-carat heart-shaped diamond Rosette necklace, which is worth an estimated $25,000.

The designer said that the gift was a pat on the back for Lohan's hard work. "Lindsay is looking great, she has a positive attitude, and we are looking forward to an amazing 2011 spending a lot of time together," Mouawad said to People.

The main surfaces of the rays are made of point-mounted safety glass, the same shatter-proof glass that adorns the facades of New York City buildings. The crystals are affixed to the inner sides of the glass in a tight, scale-like pattern to ensure maximum brilliance.

Mary Katrantzou bags fashion prize by Swiss Textiles

The 11th Swiss Textiles Award was presented today on the occasion of the first Fashion Days Zurich. Mary Katrantzou from Greece has won the fashion prize presented by the Swiss Textile Federation (Swiss Textiles) worth 100,000 Euros.

Greek-born designer Mary Katrantzou has focused on graphic art to be her area of expertise. She possesses the talent to work with form and colour, which interact in a unique fashion. Her collections are a play on the senses, with unique eye-catching patterns that flatter the feminine silhouette and at the same time express attitude and symmetry. Katrantzou has been described as the «breakout star of the digital print revolution» and has been credited of «moving as fast as pixels and ink jets can be pushed to decorate a beautiful silk dress». Her own jewellery line compliments her clothing with the same play of illusion and effect.

Her successful style is credited to the intensive and diligent textile design education she received and the experience she gathered by working for the Greek designer Sophia Kokosalaki and US fashion house, Bill Blass. Since the launching of her first collection, Mary Katrantzou’s creations are found in 30 countries and are available in over 60 select boutiques and luxury department stores worldwide.

Mary Katrantzou was born in Greece in 1983, attended the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated with a BA, and later an MA with distinction from Central Saint Martins in London. The first ever ‘International Denim Conference’ opened today to a rousing reception at the hallowed campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad, also called as the ‘Denim Capital of India, from the more than 350 plus delegates, who include, industry leaders and stakeholders from the textile industry, present on the occasion.

The conference has been organised by Fibre2fashion, the leading global B2B website for the textile, apparel and fashion industry in conjunction with the Ahmedabad chapter of the Textile Association of India (TAI), which is the foremost textile professional body in India & the largest in the world. The morning began with registration of all the delegates, who have come from across the length and breadth of India and abroad.

He said, India used to cultivate cotton and indigo was also used to dye cotton and wool more than five thousand years back, however in the intervening period, it did not witness much commercialization.

He informed that India is still struggling to find a sustainable cotton policy and at the same time, China is reducing its cotton acreage in order to increase food output, which could prove to be an opportunity for Indian denim manufacturers to take the lead. He further informed that globally, denim consumes 14 percent of the cotton produced worldwide and expects Indian denim output to touch one billion meters in a few years.

He spoke about a new strategy called ‘Blue Ocean’, which emanated from France and implies; “Why compete with everybody. Let everybody swim in the red ocean and you swim in the blue ocean, where there is less competition”. Denim manufacturing in India, he said, was born in the 1980’s from the need to compete with the decentralized sector also called denim the ‘New face of Indian textile & apparel industry’. He concluded by saying that, new innovations are needed to sustain denim for a longer period of time.

Nabrman (white flower) showcases S/S collection of abayas

Nabrman, or "white flower", is the brainchild of two Emirati women, who showcased their Spring/Summer collection of abayas on Day 3 of Dubai Fashion Week during 24th October, 2010 to 28th October, 2010 at atlantis, United Arab Emirates.

The classic loose-fitting and flowing abayas retained their shape and form, whilst being embellished with subtle prints and satin sashes. Three of the outfits incorporated light digital printing of green and blue bands in varying intensities on their sleeve ends as well as along the edges of the skirts. The 16 piece collection inserted hints of glamour while preserving their essence of minimalism.

The abayas presented were modest but equally high on the elegance quotient, representing the personality of the UAE-based brand. The models were accessorized with minimal jewellery and black shoes so as not to distract the focus from the abayas on display.

Daywear abayas were accompanied by satin sashes in baby pink, violet, brown and ivory. The sashes were draped over the abayas in innovative ways, resulting in a variety of silhouettes that transformed the traditional abaya into works of art. The eveningwear abayas factored in more glamour as they were complemented by brightly coloured satin gowns that were overlaid with the sheer black fabric, touched up with a shimmering finish.

The collection was clearly aimed at the modern Emirati woman who wishes to keep up with the latest trends, while holding steadfast to her of values of modesty and simplicity.

LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury group, achieved revenue of €14.2 billion in the first nine months of 2010, an increase of 19% compared to the same period in 2009.

With organic revenue growth of 14%, the third quarter confirmed the trends observed since the start of the year. Momentum continued to be very strong in Asia, Europe and America. Louis Vuitton once again achieved double-digit organic revenue growth.

The Fashion & Leather Goods business group achieved a 20% revenue increase during the first nine months of the year. In Perfumes & Cosmetics, revenue grew 14% in the first nine months of 2010. Christian Dior benefited from the worldwide success of its perfumes. The successful roll-out of its lipstick also contributed to the remarkable performance of the brand. US Embassy producing first Green Fashion Show in Vienna

The United States Embassy in Austria has invited René Geneva to share her experiences in the Green Fashion Industry with a special show debuting her new eco-friendly line on October 14, 2010 in the historic "Marble Room" of the Vienna Völkerkundemuseum. This is the first time the Embassy has decided to put on a show such as this to help "educate" the public in foreign countries regarding the efforts of citizens of the United States to help make our world a better place.

As one of the few fashion designers who “went green” long before it was trendy, long-time Fair Trade advocate Geneva has been on many a fashionista's radar thanks to an exclusive line sold through Whole Foods Market, and multiple appearances at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. She took time away from fashion earlier this year to tour a potential new fair trade project in Guatemala, complete training in solar-electric design and install, and simply ‘be a mom.’

In Vienna, Geneva will break her fashion-fast with an artistic collection that fits modern with historic -- with elements ranging from ultra-femme bustles to structured motorcycle jackets. In respect of ‘slow fashion’, Geneva will show both Spring and Fall seasons for 2011. Fabrics include luxurious peace silks, organic wools, and soft hemp blends such as Hempsilk -- generously donated by Enviro Textiles out of Colorado.

As The Bride Show Abu Dhabi prepares for its 10th Anniversary show in February 2011, businesses from around the region are now signing up to take part in the preeminent bridal extravaganza knowing it is the ideal platform to meet thousands of clientele.

Spenders in the UAE capital continue to defy the global trend of tightening purse strings; extravagance, opulence and glamour remain the driving force in the booming fashion and beauty industry and weddings remain big business.

Kolkata the ‘City of Joy’, after a dry spell of fashion events for 1 & half years finally received its mega fashion event - Gitanjali Lifestyle Kolkata Couture Fashion Week. The Event was produced and organised by Idea Weavers Pvt Ltd at Swissotel Kolkata a 5 star Venue. The 4 day Event ended this Sunday 12th Sep 2010.

Designer Neeta Lulla opened the Kolkata Couture Fashion Week on 9th Sep 2010 with her bridal couture. Bling is Neeta Lulla’s middle name and the designer lived up to her image at the opening show of the Kolkata Couture Fashion Week 2010 on Thursday evening at Swissotel. As the strains of Aao huzoor tumko… filled the room, models sashayed down the ramp in ethnic Indian clothes. Not-too loose chiffon patialas paired with short bandhgalas and flowing Anakarli kurtas teamed with fitted churidars made up the opening sequence.

As the show progressed, the colour palette moved from pastels to brighter hues of red, orange, blue, black and pink. Kurtas, lehngas (fitted, tiered, ruched, A-line...) paired with both cholis and long tunics and saris made up the collection. Jackets were paired with saree and lehngas. The fabrics included nets, chiffon fabrics, lace and heavier silks. The embellishments were zardosi, resham work, gota and some more zardosi. The collection was big on layering. Rituparna Sengupta was the showstopper in a rani pink brocade corset paired with a layered skirt (black lace over a blue skirt and then a drape tied at the waist).

Designer Anju Modi a founding member of FDCI ended the Day 2 with showcase of her Bridal Couture Line that payed tribute to the Royal Gharanas of Benares and attempted to contemporarise traditional crafts like Chanderi Weaving, Kota Fabrics, Varanasi Zari work and Bandhani printing.

Fashion accessories sparkle at Fashion Access

Experts point out good times ahead for small leather goods, multi-functional bags, scarves, hats and costume jewellery - a sentiment reflected on the fairgrounds of Fashion Access, a twice-a-year international fair in Hong Kong offering a vast range of head-to-toe fashion.

“In the past few years we have seen an important development among Fashion Access exhibitors,” said Perrine Ardouin, event director of Fashion Access. “Suppliers are returning with expanded product ranges. They are offering fringe products, usually small leather goods and fashion accessories, alongside their core offer, usually bags.”

One such example is Foon Group, a bag manufacturer from Hong Kong which introduced a range of stylish, lightweight pashmina shawls and will exhibit them at the upcoming Fashion Access this September. The company's founder, Winnie Foon, says scarves are an excellent complement to her core business of bags because they serve not only a practical purpose but double as a decorative element on the bag - "as seen on the catwalks at Marni", she noted.

Ms Foon is also offering collections where the design details on the scarves and bags harmonise one another, a creative concept that she believes will win buyers' attention, especially from the lucrative China market. “Contrary to belief, buyers from China have sophisticated tastes. They come to Fashion Access because they want to source fashion collections, not just individual products. The shawls we carry, which are crafted in India by our partners and designed to complement our bag designs, offer this collection concept.”

Nordstrom Rack to join The Market at Town Center

Seattle-based Nordstrom, Inc. announced plans to open a Nordstrom Rack at The Market at Town Center in Sugar Land, Tex. The 35,455 square-foot store is scheduled to open fall 2011. This will be the second Rack store in the greater Houston area following the opening of The Centre at Post Oak Rack last February.

Nordstrom also operates a full-line store at the Houston Galleria Mall, as well as six other full-line stores and six Racks in Texas.

The Market at Town Center is located in the heart of the First Colony community at the major intersection of Highway 6 and Town Center Boulevard, just east of US 59. The center features 40 national and regional retailers, including Marshalls, Ross, Old Navy and DSW, as well as nine restaurants. The Market at Town Center is owned and operated by Weingarten Realty.

"We hope our Southwest area customers will give us an opportunity to earn their business at the Sugar Land Rack when we open next fall," said Geevy Thomas, president of Nordstrom Rack. "We were so excited to enter the Houston market with our Rack last February. We're looking forward to having an even greater presence in this area so that we can serve more of our customers."

Nordstrom, Inc. reported net earnings of $146 million, or $0.66 per diluted share, for the second quarter ended July 31, 2010. This represented an increase of 38.6 percent compared with net earnings of $105 million, or $0.48 per diluted share, for the same quarter last year.

Second quarter same-store sales increased 8.4 percent compared with the same period in fiscal 2009. Net sales in the second quarter were $2.42 billion, an increase of 12.7 percent compared with net sales of $2.14 billion during the same period in fiscal 2009.

Second Quarter Summary
Nordstrom's second quarter performance reflects a continuation of the positive sales trends from the first quarter, resulting in a net earnings increase of $41 million compared with the same period in fiscal 2009. The company's performance was highlighted by well-executed sales events during the quarter: the Half-Yearly Sale for Women and Kids, the Half-Yearly Sale for Men, and the Anniversary Sale.

• Multi-channel same-store sales increased 9.9 percent compared with the same period in fiscal 2009. Full-line same-store sales in the second quarter increased 8.2 percent and Direct sales increased 34.1 percent compared with the same period in 2009. Same-store sales during the Anniversary Sale event increased 9.0 percent, benefiting from a shared inventory platform between full-line stores and the Direct business that allowed better fulfillment of customer demand. Top-performing multi-channel merchandise categories included Jewelry, Dresses and Women's Shoes. The Midwest and South regions were the top-performing geographic areas for full-line stores relative to the second quarter of 2009. During the second quarter, the company relocated one Nordstrom full-line store in Cerritos, California (Los Cerritos Center).

• Nordstrom Rack same-store sales declined 0.9 percent compared with the same period in fiscal 2009. During the second quarter the company opened one Nordstrom Rack store in Manhattan (Union Square).

• Gross profit, as a percentage of net sales, increased 133 basis points compared with last year's second quarter. The improvement was mainly driven by merchandise margin as a percentage of net sales, but also from slightly reduced buying and occupancy costs as a percentage of net sales. The company ended the quarter with sales per square foot up 8.3 percent and inventory per square foot up 8.7 percent compared with the second quarter of 2009
